Did you know that statistically, only 30% of the American population actually stores their vehicle in the garage? Why would you leave your vehicle out so that it is susceptible to all the elements of outdoors? The simple answer, you just have way too much "stuff." "Stuff" that just gets thrown in the garage and rarely if ever used. That is the truth.
But don't worry! Here at CDR Overhead Storage, not only do we have your solution, but here are some tips to get you started on your "Decluttering" and organize your garage, just the way you want it.
First and foremost, you need time. Plan at least a full day, maybe two, maybe even multiple days. Make it a family project. It will go faster, and it might even be fun.
Go through everything, including unpacked boxes from when you initially moved in.
Organize into 3 piles: keep, donate or sell, and trash.
Start with dedicated tarps or areas of your driveway that are marked with chalk and place them there. If you find yourself having a hard time "letting things go” consider a few factors.
As soon as possible, donate your giveaways or plan a yard sale.
Too much trash? Hire a junk pick service or call your local trash service, you might be able to get extra trash cans or even a dumpster service.
In addition, not everything is safe to store. Here are some examples:
Paint Storage: Extreme cold or heat can ruin it. Ask yourself, how long have you had it? Consider noting the color charts and manufacturer and disposing properly with your local environmental services.
Propane Storage: Never store propane indoors, A spark could ignite the fumes.
Paper Goods: Did you know that roaches and other insects love paper and cardboard.
Refrigerator: Most of us have "garage refrigerators". However, did you know they are actually a tremendous drain on energy because the garage is not air-conditioned.
Pet Food: Critters love to sniff out your fur baby's food. Keep it in a sealed container inside instead of the garage.
Safely Store Items: If you store lawnmower gas in the garage, you should also have a 5 to 10 pound U.L.-listed extinguisher, also consider installing a carbon monoxide detector.
Keep Things Off the Garage Floor: Keep items off the floor whenever possible. You will have much more space for the car to move freely.
Finally, when "Cleanup day" is done, give us a call and our experts will be ready to show you how to organize your garage with our custom overhead storage systems.
